Language Arts: We read some Christmas stories and poems. Kennedy copied one of her favorites in her sketchbook. "I liked the poem that's called A Child is Born. I wrote it down and I wrote it in my tiniest words as possible." We read A Little Match Girl and I (Mom) commented that it was a sad story. But Kingston said, "No, it's a happy story." Kennedy said, "It's happy because she gets to be with her grandmother again." Kennedy typed up the words to a song. We revised it to type one line of the song on one line and added correct punctuation and capitalization. Kennedy did the ISAT Interim test (ICA both Math and ELA). Kingston plays Teach Your Monster to Read app and learned the "ch" and "sh" sounds.
Math: Kennedy did the ICA Math Test. Both Kennedy and Kingston did a lesson online about fractions. Then they did a fraction worksheet. Then we did a gumball estimating activity. Kennedy says, "Fractions is how you cut things. If you cut a pizza and the customer wants one half of the fourths pepperoni and the other half mushrooms. You cut the pizza into four pieces and you put two-fourths pepperoni and the other two-fourths mushrooms." Kingston says, "If there's six and six then you color all of them. If there's three and four then you color three. If you have one and five you do one. If you have three take away from seven you have four. If you have eight and you take away three then you have five. If you have five and you take away two then it's three. If you have eight and you take away five then you have three. If you have seven and you take away four then you have three too."
Social Studies: We read in Story of the World about India's King of the World and the Taj Mahal. This led us to look up what the 7 Wonders of the World are. Then Kennedy read some Wikipedia information about the Taj Mahal. Kennedy says, "In Story of the World we read about the Taj Mahal in India. The Taj Mahal is a tomb that the king made for him and his wife."
Science: We watched Mystery Science and learned about cold weather. Kennedy says, "I learned that the South Pole is colder than Idaho and colder than the North Pole. I learned that if you get your hair wet and go outside then it will freeze into snow spaghetti. Don't try that at home." Kingston says, "You can make water balloons and put them in the snow and put snow around them. Then they become ice and you can do snow bowling. I thought the coldest place was the North Pole but the coldest place was the South Pole." They watched a bunch of Generation Genius videos.
Tech/Trep: Kingston built a lego city. He built a couple roundabouts in his city. He built a rocket from our construction toy set. "I built a lego city. Me like building it. Cars, roads, buildings. I built a blue building and that's my favorite one." Kennedy typed up the lyrics to a song. "My mom had me type up the lyrics to 'Mary Did You Know?' She had me set up a timer for five minutes of typing and five minutes of break. When I was getting close to the end of the song I skipped my break so I could finish. I finished after the last timer went off." Kennedy started helping her dad build a 3D printer.
Elective: Kennedy sketched some pictures of the Taj Mahal in her sketchbook. "My favorite part was sketching it. I sketched it and then drew it from the outside." Kennedy is learning to sing "Mary Did You Know?" and listened to a lot of variations on YouTube. We are putting together a Nativity play and practiced it this week. Kennedy played "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" and other songs on the piano. Kingston also experimented playing the piano. They both drew with stencils.
